Zanzibar
In January 2003, STACC joined with the Ministry of
Health in Zanzibar and the Ivo de Carneri Foundation of Milan to open
a clinic at Gombani on Pemba Island. Over a thousand patients attend each
month, with malaria being the commonest cause of illness.
Most patients had to walk to the clinic. A generous donor gave
STACC a Land Rover, which has been shipped from Europe to Pemba Island. As
a result, a mobile clinic
is now in operation in addition to the fixed clinic at Gombani. Arrangements
are being made to distribute insecticide-treated bednets to protect children
from malaria.
